Testing pH with Litmus Paper

Today students participated in another Science Investigation.

Investigation Questions

  1. What is the pH of different household substances?
  2. What is the pH of saliva? Is everybody’s the same?

Students made predictions whether different household substances (soap, lemonade, cleaning vinegar, milk etc.) were acidic, neutral or basic. Students then followed the investigation procedure using litmus paper to show the pH of each substance.

Once we had tested all our substances, we then made predictions as to whether our saliva would all be the same pH or different. Many students predicted that the pH of a persons saliva would depend on what they had to eat or drink and would probably be different. We found out that our saliva ranged from 7 (neutral) to 9 (basic).
